The Coal Porters. Sid Griffin, www.sidgriffin.com the band’s leader and mandolin player, was a leader in the Paisley Underground of the ‘80s with the Long Ryders, one of the founding fathers of alt-country. Griffin moved to the UK and formed the Coal Porters, a vehicle for his love of the Byrds- and Gram Parsons-influenced roots rock. Over the years, the Coal Porters have evolved into The UK's top traditional bluegrass outfit. Griffin is also an author and music historian, penning such books as Million Dollar Bash: Bob Dylan, The Band, and the Basement Tapes and Gram Parsons: A Musical Biography, taking the story to the small screen as a BBC TV documentry.
We find him and the band here in concert, with an interview midway through from The Square Wheels House Concert in Strathppeffer in the Highlands of Scotland, in conversation with Rob Ellen of the Medicine Show.
